November 30, 2006 - Lifting

girl in the rain

Out of expectation, it was raining in the afternoon, heavy rain.  I was so worried about my homework for the DP Blog. With the umbrella, I still decided to walk around to find some atmosphere of rainy day.

Watery world again, even this bronze sculpture. Her posture, with a CAMERA in hands, let my brian cells at once think of some sentences from a poem in Chinese :抬望眼,仰天长啸,壮怀激烈。It was written by the ancient poet :岳飞 (yue4 fei1) who lived in Song Dynasty. Actually it is not very proper for a girl to express this kind of feeling. I am off the subject so far. :) But I like her lifting-head statue. (The meanning of that sentence: Lifting my eyes, Towards the sky I let out a battle cry; My blood is boiling.)

This sculpture locates on Lu4 Jia1 Zui3 Plaza. There are 3 characters in this group which is called “Lao Wai visit Pu Dong”(lao3 wai4=foreigners). (And after the Theme Day post, I will show you the whole group figure. ) The sculpture was created by a young famous Chinese sculptor 王曜(wang2 yao4) who works in East China Normal University now.

November 29, 2006 - We come~~ :)

taking photos

Cold weather arrived here today, windy and windy…

I guess they are one family, son and parents. From their appearance, I guess they came from the inland part, maybe the farmers. I didn’t have chance to ask them. That was a pity. When I passed by, I was attracted by the expression of the parents. A little bit serious, a little bit happy, maybe more happiness inside…I really believe that they felt very happy at the moment when they took the photo in front of the beautiful and tall Oriental Pearl Tower.

Lots of farmers in China really don’t have many chances to travel. They work very hard to try to survive in the fast developing industrial society. Farmers, it is a big problem in our country. The proportion of the people who live in the rural areas (who we call them farmers) is more than 3/4 in China. In economy, in rights, in politics, in education rights… they less have the equal chance. Er, lots of things to complain about this topic, might I stop now… the Great Fire Wall….:) I am still afraid of it. Bad news : I can’t open the wikipedia again.

November 28, 2006 - Mirror Mirror…

Mirror

Mirror mirror hanging on the wall
You don’t have to tell me who’s the biggest fool of all
Mirror mirror I wish you could lie to me
and bring my baby back, bring my baby back to me

Mirror mirror lie to me
Show me what I wanna see
Mirror mirror lie to me
to me…

November 27, 2006 - Life is somewhere? Life is everywhere …

small mushroom

After spent the whole day at home on Sunday, I even don’t want to go to work. Lazy

This photo was taken in last week. That day I went to the downtown to rush for a meeting in the morning. But as you see, I found this in the downtown—-the cute mushrooms in the greenbelt. Big surprise for my eyes and brain:I took out my camera, with big smile, then kept them for ever! :) Life is somewhere?? I think life is everywhere.

Here is another photo of the mushrooms in the greenbelt which was in the distant view.

November 26, 2006 - Tonic : Sesame+walnut

Bu3 Pin3

As I mentioned several days before, according the Solar Calendar the winter is coming. And people here (most old people) will begin to eat some tonics. Here it is one traditional type of tonics to eat in Shanghai. The ingredients are the sesame powder, walnut powder and some sugar powder. People in China believe that the sesame and walnut are very good for body, esp. for the brain cells, hair, and kidney, etc.

But why only in the cold weather people like to eat them?? According to the traditional Chinese medical theories, during the cold weather body is not easy to sweat, and what you eat could be assimilated easily and mostly. People eat this type tonic in their daily life, and aslo some weak people will go to the hospital to take some tonics which are some traditional Chinese medicine. So if you go to see the herbalist doctors now, you have to in queue for a long time.

The big Chinese character you see in the photo is “補”(written in traditional Chinese ,in simple Chinese is 补)(bu3), it means to nourish/to take a tonic. And the Chinese characters for sesame is 芝麻(zhi1 ma0), walnut is 核桃(he2 tao2) /胡桃(hu2 tao2).
