November 1, 2006 - Theme Day: Flower seller–Granny

Time: 16:10, Oct. 27th, 2006
Location: West Nanjing Road (near Num. 1 Shi men Road ), Shanghai

Today as usual, 1st of November is the “Theme Day” : Something that is about to disappear soon.

I saw the granny when I was out of the Line 2 Subway: West Nanjing Road station. She sat beside the exit, where lots of people were passing by all the time. She sold the small Gardenia flowers ( 2 yuan per tiny bunch ). The small basket was near her feet, covered with a piece of cloth. Some budding flowers were put in order (see here ). The air around is so fragrant.

When talking about flower seller, most old Shanghainese will think back those sweet & soft cry of the flower girls in old days. The “flower girl” is already a symbol for the old days of this city. Now we cannot see the “flower girls” on the street (if you like to see the Chinese movies, maybe you’ll notice the flower girls could be seen in the stories about shanghai.), only this types of grannies can be seen once in a while. They are old grannies, who seems still live in the old times, in a lower standard of living nowadays. They still know how to make this kind of “old type” flower knickknack.

When I bought 2 bunches, and planned to take a photo of her basket. The granny showed me one bunch, and told me to hold the gardenia like this could take a better photo. Listenned her Suzhou dialect, I pressed the shutter.

(when I was on my way, I developed this photograph. So lucky when I was on my back way, she was still there selling her flowers. I gave the photo to her. She was very happy, and so did I!! )
