November 29, 2006 - We come~~ :)

taking photos

Cold weather arrived here today, windy and windy…

I guess they are one family, son and parents. From their appearance, I guess they came from the inland part, maybe the farmers. I didn’t have chance to ask them. That was a pity. When I passed by, I was attracted by the expression of the parents. A little bit serious, a little bit happy, maybe more happiness inside…I really believe that they felt very happy at the moment when they took the photo in front of the beautiful and tall Oriental Pearl Tower.

Lots of farmers in China really don’t have many chances to travel. They work very hard to try to survive in the fast developing industrial society. Farmers, it is a big problem in our country. The proportion of the people who live in the rural areas (who we call them farmers) is more than 3/4 in China. In economy, in rights, in politics, in education rights… they less have the equal chance. Er, lots of things to complain about this topic, might I stop now… the Great Fire Wall….:) I am still afraid of it. Bad news : I can’t open the wikipedia again.

Jing, I sent you an email to songjing0218@yahoo.ch Did you get it?

The reason you probably cannot get into wikipedia is because (and I don’t know if you know this or not so I must tell you), you are blocked from lots of sites that have certain words in them. The big bad wolf is doing it (I’m trying not to use words that might “flag” something. Do you know what I am saying?

There was a lot written about it in all the world newspapers. But I cannot send a link because you probably would not be able ot open it.

I am so sorry that it is that way. But if you ever want to know anything that you cannot access, I will get it for you. Just ask me.

Sad to have to be concerned about the words one uses … On the subject of the expressions of those in the photo. It is common for people in my family and I’m sure others to smile and laugh and then put on a serious face when they are photographed. I had that problem for years because I felt my teeth did not photograph nicely. Since then I have gotten over it and smile anyway … On the subject of farmers, the US had what was called the industrial revolution during which there was a mass migration for farmers into the cities to find work in the manufacturing industry. Recently labor has shifted from manufacturing to the service and the knowledge economy. In fact I work in the knowledge economy and my father was a farmer. In the final analysis it is the farmer I hold with most respect. In my eyes they contribute to society like a doctor does … I really enjoy your blog because China is unique and interesting with a lot to discuss.

I Echo Denton. Your caption is very interesting because it helps discovering the “real” China. I also enjoy the fact that you dare saying things that are not politically correct in your country.

Thank you for all this.

Eric

Yes, Jing, you are living in a very interesting time in your country. I find it fascinating. The rhetoric never matches reality, eh. In past times, all farmers (peasants) were meant to become equal….that didn’t work out. So now we see the economic miracle which leaves many behind (great wealth too often relies on the entrenched poverty of others). But at the same time, some things remain as under control as they ever were, hence your lack of access to Wikipedia and other websites.

Don’t worry jing about the great firewall, we know already a lot of things about what they want to hide. It is no secret. Besides, the more they try the more the world knows. An image is worth a thousand words. You can tell by the pose, the wrinkles, the body, the color, the ingenuity look and the place to take the photograph. Times are achanging though. Soon you will be able to open whatever page you want, and say whatever you want. That won’t mean that you are completely free but at least you will not worry about words.
