cathy cinema

This is A cinema for Firday~~  :) happy Firday my friends…

This is the “Cathay Theatre” located on the Huai2 hai3 Road(Middle), we call it “Guo2 Tai4 dian4 ying3 yuan4″(国泰电影院),five Chinese characters(in literally): guo2 = country, tai4 = peaceful, dian4 ying3 yuan4 = cinema. It was built in 1932, designed by a Hungarian architect C.H.Gonda.(Sorry, I didn’t find more useful information about him, but some articles said he was once very famous in Shanghai in 1930s.) At that time, the newspaper “Shen Bao” reported the Cathay Theatre was “the most luxurious, the most modern “ cinema in Shanghai. Before 1949, the films showed there were mostly from America or England. The building is the typical ART DECO style.
Now the cinema was redecorated, and it’s a very great choice for Friday night.

(When I prepared for this post, I looked up more information online about the ART DECO, and I am shocked, because Shanghai is the second city (first is New York) of the Art Deco-style old buildings left. I found 12 famous ones:(name & year)
1. Jing Jiang Hotel–old part (1932),
2. Peace Hotel (1929),
3. Park Hotel (1931),
4. Paramout Hall (1932),
5. Cathay Theatre (1932),
6. Hamilton House (1933)–now called “Fu zhou house”,
7. Metropole Hotel (1934),
8. Broadway Mansions Hotel Bund (1933),
9. Henshan Hotel (1934),
10. I.S.Gascogne Apartments (1934)–now called “huai hai apartment”,
11. Empire Mansions (1935)– now called “huai hai house”
12. Dong Hu Hotel (1935)

November 9, 2006 - Maid on the phone –sculpture

girl on the phone

This is the first time I post the sculpture in Shanghai — Maid on the Phone

In my mind, there are less sculptures in public places in east countries than it in west countries. After seeing many beautiful sculptures on most DP blogs, I begin to notice the sculptures in city. And this one is very famous in shanghai, because it was stolen 6 years ago. The sculpture “Maid on the phone” was appeared on Huai2 hai3 Road(淮海路)in 1996, and it was the first sculpture of that road. Unhappy, On March of 2000, it was stolen by a bad bunch of people. After a long-term investigation, in 2004 the policemen placed those theives under arrest.  This year, 26th May, the present one returned to Huai2 hai3 Road, a new “maid” made by alpaka.

people

Near the Oriental Pearl Tower, I can see lots of travelers everyday. And I shot this moment because of this mixted atmosphere: the families from different place meet at this second in Shanghai.  :)

It reminds me one sentence: Should we have stayed at home, wherever that may be?

November 7, 2006 - Windy … winter …

flags

These days the weather here is changing … dropped to 13 Celsiuse degree, and windy all the time.  Another winter will come here soon.

Today is another term in Chinese lunar calendar: 立冬(li4 dong1)(in literally li4 = begin, dong1 = winter). Among the Chinese lunar calendar, there are 24 solar terms in a year. Each season there are 6 solar terms. And Li dong is the first term for winter. It means the winter is beginning.  But within a big country as China, the climate is various. Nowadays in the northern part, the temperature dropped to around freezing point; in the southern part, people still wear T-shirts. Only in the middle part of China, the weather basically accords with the 24 Chinese solar terms.

(the other solar terms i will introduce when it comes. :)   )

November 6, 2006 - Confusion…

street view

When you walk on the road, what will be the objects you would notice??

This photo is about the electrical wires I saw on the road. With the developing of the city’s building, all kinds of wires are all disappeared in the air, for safer and cleaner space for people to live. Nowadays this kind of view is less to be seen in Shanghai, only some old areas. I took this photo in Huang pu District which is the old area of this city, there the foreigners built the first settlement around 1843. There we still can see lots of Western style buildings. It is a sightworthy area if you want to know and understand this city more.
