August 25, 2007 - Coalballs

meiqiu , shanghai China

Coalballs on the street of shanghai. Once it was the main material for the residents here to cook, one necessity. Now, its rare to see this kind of coalballs in the city. The gas replaces it for a long time. An how about in your city?? Is there the similar changes in your daily life??

Japanese used to use such coalballs and now I rarely see them. But we use them when we go camping.

We used to use coalballs in Seoul and Pusan when we lived in Korea 1960-1967…we used them for cooking and home heating. The Korean word for them is Yuntan {phonetic spelling} They were efficient, but also dangerious because of the carbon monoxide emissions. Lots of people ended up in’greener pastures’ because of them.
