is that fog or smog that i see? we have been reading quite a bit about the very bad pollution in china especially as it relates to the upcoming olympics.
great photo and great blog!!
To Mr. Radman,
What you see in the sky of Jing’s photo is typically referred to as “haze”. It’s typically not very smoggy in the winter months in Shanghai; it’s more noticeable in the warmer months. But, if you ever have the opportunity to travel to China, you’ll find that Shanghai has the best air quality of any of the large cities in China.
The Municipality of Shanghai years ago wisely restricted the number of vehicles on the streets and highways in Shanghai. Currently, a resident of Shanghai can only purchase an available license plate for a vehicle at a monthly public auction. These plates typically sell for $5000+USD; therefore, this makes automobile ownership out of reach of the majority of residents. With a limited number of motor vehicles on the streets (about 900,000 currently), it does not create a huge smog problem as in other Chinese cities.
Also, many of the heavy industrial businesses have moved outside of the Shanghai area, thus, reducing air pollutants further
