Well, its a very challenge job if you try take the portraits of people on the streets. Most of people in China are still friendly about the photography, sometimes we still could meet the situation. For me, the curiosity about the beggars always brings my attention to them wherever I go. Nowadays I do not think people are too poor to hardly find a job to support themselves basically. And we do not have the Hippie culture roots neither. But there are still quite a few beggars on the streets. And if you have been in the big cities in China, maybe you already experienced the very annoying encounter. Some will grab your arms/legs to try to force you to notice them. Once I met 2 little begging boys in another city, and seeing their very innocent faces I had the desire to talk to them, and I tried. But as long as they saw my camera, they just ran away. I wonder why cant they stay home with their families? Why cant they get the normal jobs to earn a living?
Though I didn’t get the chance to talk, what I did is to use my camera to take the photos if possible. Sometimes no right words to tell the story, then the photo could show the real moment.
Wish you a nicer & warmer new week!

I agree sometimes no right words can tell the story, their story. You write very well in english better than some reporters I know here. but you art background has always allowed you say so much visually. It’s easy to see your curiosity, compassion or direction with the camera. I often look at your photos for awhile before reading your story line/text. your images have so much to say, especially if I have looked at your flickr site before reading DP and see your words, or discussion, like film type all very helpful too and together adds another dimension to the story line.
Like today’s posting with the fuji professional film…….how you come up with those pictures shows the boundless creatviity you bring to your work and play. My pictures are rather straighforward, yours….. are so free. I am learning slowly from you…taking notes too.
I have been reading your older post/blogs: have some questions
About a day this week in China called,
Guang Gun Jie : 光棍节
People say it was first celebrated at various universities in Nanjing, capital city of Jiangsu Province during the 1990s. Isn’t that kind of near you, so you must have some insights to this Singles Day, hehehe!!!!!! As a reporter, and a participant…which angle will your story be from??
As a jogger… will it be difficult to catch you???? What kind of runing shoe will you be wearing???
We will have to pick our location with care….thnks for all the background on life in Shanghai
I do have a nicer and warmer week ,,,,,coz of U
………I watched your slide show of :Children of the Street, Instead of seeing just a picture and then another photo, the slide show…took me away to a place I never been, like a movie I was following you as you follow them. The feeling like you said, was
Kids are the innocent
Kids are the future
Kids are the real …..
My mother and father are both gone, my older brother is gone and even my younger brother have all passed away. Only my sister is left, she is older. About two years ago, she lost her job. Ended up homeless, on the streets, I didn’t know. For about a year she lived on the streets and in shelters for people with nothing. We meet by chance in our city, at the Park. Was , well you can easily guess the feeling.
I see in your photos…….a wonderful story for those that haven’t had a chance to tell it
