Taken @ Ren min road, shanghai
Ren min road is nearby the old town, and also near to the Temple of City God . The city is always doing the construction to renovate those very old houses. And this is a very usual view on the streets nowadays. I dont know how to comment about this fast changing of the city. Sometimes something is missing, sometimes its nice to see the new changes and development. Eveything is not perfect, nothing is perfect. Maybe its a better way to see it as the “destroyed” beauty? Still cold, still working days ~ but wish you see something new in your daily life ~ cheers!!!

anything that’s necessary and useful is beautiful… whether it’s old or new.. but nowdays we are wasting much money on destorying and rebuilding… so pity!
Monan……..I so glad you commented on this image. how are you???? Hope you are staying warm in Bejing. Love your recent B/W images. What I wanted to ask was could I use your image of Jing, the one taged Gold-ish. To make a copy for myself, just for my apartment? It is something quite special…..like Jing.
I wonder if we could create a T shirt or sweat shirt . Mabye you and Jing have already thought of this, or maybe you would want to collaborte with the Shanghai flickr group or her extended SHDP family…We need a design on it, you know a logo..about SHDP.
We should and we could wear it all the time, or whenever, so more and more people can learn about Shanghai…SHDP and the artist behind it. So, what do you think, need some time? Many tourist visit where I live and the weather is always nice, so from different destinations could see the ” real shangahi as Jing always says? Plus sometimes I would wear it to sleep, not always, just so SHDP is close to me.
take care Monan…….good luck with all
love the comments from those readers……Like to see your black and white images. black and white photos have their own visual vocabulary . Understanding the city as it changes through the readers eyes and yours is a great read, because it is happening…..now!. Not much time for reflection.
Like the granny whom sold the gardineas back in Nov 2006. The flower girls, you said they are dissappearing. Was a moving story piicture. ” The destroyed beauty” like they way you say it.
I have a question about monan’s photo of U.
This one: Gold~ishfield@ Songjing, shanghai
Missing the warm light, the happy time with my friends….:)))
Taken by great photographer — Monan
Do you think you talk to Monan so I could get permission to make a
ONE FOR YOU AND
one for Monan…
copy of her photo?
I think visually it expresses everything about you so well……When I
first saw it, I just paused, because when I saw that image, you feel
that you could…just walk up to you! and touch you ! and you would turn
around, it was so real…..
your long term friendship with her, the art backrounds you two have and
her camera work, tell a
special story here.
Friends are like gold….you have so many Jing…
like 12K , or even 24k.
I hope we can be friends a long time 2. And ……..treasure what we
have!!!.
If you both say yes….Well, I will be very happy ….I never asked for
anyone’s picture from flickr before
“五”(wu, literally five)
1. Only high resolution quality photo copy paper could make us see
Monan’s skill and technique well. So I will use that kind
2. Have to find the right frame, a strong one, so when I give your
picture a hug, it won’t break! I promise to ask your picture if you
need a hug too,
often if you like.
3. When I go to sleep and walk by..I will smile and say……Good night
Jing! Have a good dream, good sleep
4. Upon awaking, I won’t forget to let you know to get up 2,
Good morning…A new day awaits you…. except on saturday’s.
I think I read you like to sleep on that day.
5. On the weekends I can take your picture outside and show you our
beautiful friendly southern sun
and ask the warm sunshine 2 touch you so you can feel it ..all the way
back in Shanghai.
It’s sunny here everyday Jing
please let Monan know we all love her photos 2
Time magazine just ran a story about the Top 50 websites in 2009
see here:
Computers don’t handle visual imagery with the same native ease with which they parse text or crunch numbers. Flickr was the first site to solve this problem with something called collaborative tagging. The idea is that if everyone is allowed to tag everyone else’s uploaded photos, then a rough-and-ready categorization will naturally emerge from the wisdom of the crowd. It works because it has to — there aren’t enough librarians in the world to look after Flickr’s archive of 3 billion photos, much less file them away for future reference. But it also works because the many really is smarter than the sum of its parts. The Library of Congress has even started to poll the Flickr hive mind when cataloging its own photos.
I think Flickr will be come more a place to visit for many around the world….hope they come upon SHDP soon.
Once a week I have been looking at the traffic/viewership of your site found under that cute picture of a very sweet and young girl. Interesting helpful information, hope the numbers go up up and up.
Beautiful! I always feel torn about that too–it’s good to have new businesses and housing, but it’s also tragic to lose buildings with history and character.
Good evening, enjoyed reading everyone’s footprints. I don’t know much about the history of Shanghai but I am learning through the comments and stories you included. It’s much better than than buying a book at the major book stores. If you go to the travel section, look for China and then find Shanghai, you really find,,,, boring!
I did immediately recognize the importante of the picture before.
The City God Temple in Shanghai originated as the Jinshan God Temple, dedicated to the spirit of Jinshan, or “Gold Mountain”, an island off the coast of Shanghai. It was converted into a City God Temple in 1403, during the Yongle era of the Ming dynasty.
It is really a face of Shanghai too that many would see as a first time vistor. What I first saw was the feeling of being lost! Your a great story teller, that is what hit me first and then the history behind the place. Sometimes it takes me a day or two understand all the information you provide.
Then the following image……..was in a way connected to the first picture, not by intent but by….chance. I read in ancient times that the Temple was dedicated to…Jinshan or Gold Mountain. So interesting a background. This feeling of gold followed right into the next image the following day. Delightful.
What seperates your blog from many is in a word, it’s ” organic” Alive and growing. Not like those books found in travel sections….they died so long ago. The other point being , is your blog is open ended …like standing on the bow of a ship, looking out to the sea…to discover more of Shanghai and your life there.
Interesting blog to say the least, keep it up Jing
